The city’s population of more than 30,000* makes Palmerston the Northern Territory’s second largest population, predominantly young working families and Defence personnel attached to Top End military facilities.
The city of Palmerston, 20 minutes by road from the Darwin central business district, is the Northern Territory’s fastest growing city – and it’s still expanding. At one time, it was the fastest growing metropolis in Australia, with landscaped suburbs, good sporting facilities such as a swimming pool, local soccer, Australian Football and general sports grounds, pubs, clubs, restaurants, a major shopping centre and a cinema complex. The newest of the Palmerston suburbs including Bellamack where I live and play & Zucolli are adjacent to the tranquil bushland and feature modern, breezy tropical houses and townhouses, interspersed with attractive bushland.
A $50 million hotel in Palmerston’s CBD has been given development approval, as Stage One of the Maluka Views development project.
The 161 room hotel, including 32 suites and 41 short stay apartments, will be behind The Hub on Roystonea Avenue, and is being created by local investors John ‘Foxy’ Robinson and Mick Burns.
This site has sat vacant for many years and finally the government has released it for development through its urban infill strategy which has apparently identified 70 parcels of Crown land across the Territory.
Hotel accommodation is under immense pressure, especially in the Dry, this development will bring online much needed rooms for the developing City of Palmerston.
Stage Two of Maluka Views will be residentially-focused, with a mix of commercial, retail and alfresco dining to be offered.

The Gateway Shopping Centre in Yarrawonga will be about 30,000sqm of retail and leisure space and more than 60 stores and kiosks.
The development will be undertaken by Coombes Property Group.
“This will be a landmark development not only for Palmerston, but for Darwin in general,” he said.
The development will assist with the creation of 3000-plus jobs over the three stages, and increase the retail retention of spending in the Territory rather than whats escaping interstate.

We have all seen the roads closed around Palmerston’s CBD. This is the first stage of the new main street which will run from Chung Wah Terrace to Roystonea Ave between the library and the recreation centre. This stage is due to be completed before the end of this year with the second stage commencing in the next dry season. We will give regular progress updates and some computer images of what it will look like soon.
